Lame Man's Terms, Vol.1

I have received responses that said it would be a good idea to give some terms for those who have not been properly initiated into the Wonderful World of Fantasy Baseball. In fact, many readers from the class have expressed sentiments that they don't know much about baseball! Here I present to you, Lame Man's Terms Vol.1

Pitcher: A person who throws the ball to the catcher.
Batter: A person who tries to hit the ball thrown by the pitcher.
Catcher: Tries to catch the ball thrown by the pitcher.
Fielder: similar to a defenseman in other sports, the fielder tries to prevent the other team from scoring.

There are nine fielders, including the pitcher and catcher, on the field at all times. They are: the Infielders: First Baseman, Second Baseman, Third Baseman, Shortstop, and the Outfielders: Left Field, Center Field, and Right Field.

Single: a One-base hit
Double: a Two-Base hit
Triple: a Three-base hit
Home Run: A popular term for "going all the way", a home run is also used to describe what happens when a batter hits the ball and scores on the same play. This usually is because the ball has cleared the outfield fence without hitting the ground.

Stolen Base: When a base runner advances from one base to another in between pitches.
Fly Out: When a batter hits the ball in the air and it is caught before it lands.
Ground Out: When a batter hits the ball and a fielder has the ball in their glove and has their foot on first base before the batter can run and touch first base.

I love this post. I really feel that I now have a better understanding of what you sports people are talking about. It is interesting how you gave an overview of what each term meant and also gave a link. I have heard a lot about fantasy leagues, but I have never really known what it was. So again for those of us non sports people the definition for fantasy leagues. Thanks for giving pity on those of us who are a little sports challenged, your blog looks really good.

I thank you and so does my boyfriend. I've been to a couple good games but didn't really get into the game. One time was in Chicago at Wrigleys Field, all I remember was how beautiful the stadium was and Sammy Sosa hitting a home run out into the apartment buildings. Another game, was at the Coors field in Denver. All I remember is how beautiful it was and people watching. The last game I went to was of course the McAfee Coliseum. It was also fun and beautiful but not as much as the first. If I knew how the game was played I may have enjoied these events a little more.

This post is really helpful. I am one of those people who are hopelessly clueless when it comes to sports. I find it really helpful, it makes me want to learn more. It is good that you listened to the readers. However, now that you have clarified these things you should continue writing with all the experience you have. I found Free ESPN Fantasy Baseball. This might be an interesting link for your readers who want to get involved in the game.

I agree with the other posters in saying how helpful this post was in furthering my understanding of baseball. About the "lame man's" terms, are you joking? I can't tell if this is a play on words of some kind that is aimed at those who don't understand baseball or something else. Anyway, good post. Here's a link
to a kind of funny comparison of baseball and football made by George Carlin. It's almost relevant to your post.

I like how you broke it down for the non-fantasy baseball demographic.

I play all fantasy sports, but baseball is usually my strongest one. I don't read all the insiders because I find they usually throw me off. I find a few sleepers here and there--love the waiver wire because the next Jason Bay will be sitting out there.

What fantasy site do you like the most? I'm pretty much using Yahoo, even though I loved Sandbox before they started charging.

One question.. what's a baseball? Did you know that alot of research goes into baseballs? Oh yeah, it's true.

I liked how you explained baseball for people who have no clue about the sport. Were you trying to sound condescending? I though it sounded that way, but I thought the post was funny. I will admit baseball is not my favorite sport (I’ll watch the playoffs or go to a game) so I forgive me for not giving back the best input.

Originally there was an image at the top of the post that said, "Catering to the novice? Lame, Man!" I should have left it in there. It wasn't very clear, sorry. I am deeply saddened for all that were upset by this. Okay, you're right, not deeply saddened. Of course, it was also a play on words. And that's clever!
